215 The Rolling Stones – Sticky Fingers

With its offhand mixture of decadence, roots music, and outright malevolence, Sticky Fingers set the tone for the rest of the decade for the Stones.

  1. My favorite album of all time is “Exile on Mainstreet” and my love for that album bleeds over into an affection for this whole Stones era, even though I’m not a big Rolling Stones fan. Their song “Torn and Frayed” was such an apt way to describe the band at this time. Brian Jones – the heart of the first iteration of the band – was dead. They had been the biggest rock & roll band in the world for a decade but were flat broke. They had arguably just killed someone and maybe killed the peace and love dream of the 60’s as a whole. Half of them were hooked on hard drugs and the other half were drunk. They were wearing blousy shirts, sleeping all day and staying up all night and living in castles. And you know who does that? Vampires. They were just a bunch of drug-addicted vampires waving guns at Frenchmen and stealing other people’s music. It was a wild time for The Rolling Stones and I’m glad to be able to hear what came out of it.
